Kerrera is an island in the Scottish Inner Hebrides, close to the town of Oban. In 2011 it had a usually resident population of 34, and it is linked to the mainland by frequent passenger ferry from the Gallanach Road (about 3 km SW of Oban). It is around 7 km long and around 2 km wide, and is separated from the mainland by the Sound of Kerrera, about 500 metres wide.

Previously unpublished shot taken on my week away roaming Skye in a campervan during the pandemic 'lull' of September 2020. The only time I have felt truly happy and alive since 2019 was this week on this magnificently beautiful and mystical isle. Since then the pandemic worsened, my back failed me and now Putin has brought widescale war to Europe with the ever-present threat that escalation could turn a monstrous catastrophe into an existential apocalypse.

Tonight I choose to remember this happier time. Capturing this magical scene, savouring it for a while and then descending onto the foggy beach to find fossilised dinosaur footprints.

Wishing you all a peaceful and safe weekend.

Landscape on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.

It was difficult to get a 'special' shot of this amazing place on such a dull overcast day so I decided to scale a hillock and include some people in the shot for scale.

The Fairy Glen is so named for the simple reason that the area looks a little unearthly. It has nothing to do with fairies, or so they say... It's like a Quirang landslip but in miniature. The heavily worn path on left of frame climbs a little to a basalt topping of the tallest of the outcrops just here. A great vantage point I am sure but, sadly, my ankle wouldn't take the gradient. The spiral of stones is a tourist creation that the locals keep clearing away to try to keep the area as natural as possible.

I imagine in beautiful light the place looks extra magical but, under these clouds, I didn't feel like taking too many shots. I just wanted to sit upon the damp grass and soak in the peace and atmosphere of the Fairy Glen.

Enjoy!

Happy Fence Friday seems to be a bit of a thing and I honestly have no idea why.

This barbed fence bordered a track near to the campsite at Staffin on the Isle of Skye. Captured while on a campervan holiday in September 2020 as the mists started to fall.

The shot was not entirely hand held - 1/60th at 200mm so I used a monopod and a little bit of lateral image stabilisation, a tool I have always owned but rarely use.

Wishing you all a fantastic weekend of photography. Enjoy!

Dog Otter, Isle of Mull

This point-and-shoot photo of the Isle of Skye was taken in 2006. The island lies off Scotland's north-west coast. It is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides, and is joined to the mainland by a bridge.

Ship wreck at Salen on the Isle of Mull

Staffa from the Old Norse for stave or pillar island, is an island of the Inner Hebrides in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The Vikings gave it this name as its columnar basalt reminded them of their houses, which were built from vertically placed tree-logs.

Staffa lies about 10 kilometres (6 mi) west of the Isle of Mull. The area is 33 hectares (82 acres) and the highest point is 42 metres (138 ft) above sea level (Source: Wikipedia).

Unfortunately, we could not visit the island with the famous Fingal's cave because of heavy sea, so only a picture of the sea side from a small boat.
